Do you need to get up-to-date on smoke alarm regulations? Recent changes have occurred in Queensland so here’s what’s happening…

The new legislation applies to any new home or existing home being substantially renovated from 1st January. From 2022, any home being sold, leased or rented must also comply and for all existing homes, owners have until 1st January 2027.

All smoke alarms must:

  • be photoelectric and comply with Australian Standard 3786-2014
  • not also contain an ionisation sensor; and
  • be less than 10 years old; and
  • operate when tested; and
  • be interconnected with every other ‘required’ smoke alarm in the dwelling so all activate together

How to test your smoke alarm:

  • Warn everyone – You don’t want everyone to freak out when they hear the alarm going off.
  • Get a helper – The alarm should be heard all over the house. Ask your helper to stand at the other end of the house to be sure it is loud enough.
  • Check the power – Hold the ‘test’ button down for a few seconds. This should sound the alarm (If no sound occurs, contact Prompt Electrical on 07 5535 6642 or 0411 728 572.)
  • Check the smoke detector – There are specific aerosol spray cans to test this. Do as directed on the can. Otherwise, a couple of matches will do the job too. If no sound occurs, the sensor may need replacing.
  • Do this process once a month.
